There was an interesting article in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday 5/11/14. The article was about finding investments in areas that you weren’t previously aware of. The part of the article that I found the most interesting was finding investments in your marriage.
Invest in Your Marriage
Of course, investing in a positive marriage is always a good thing but this article suggested that married couples increase their wealth by 4% a year by being married. This is according to a study by the Center for Human Resource Research at Ohio State University. They surmise because couples join their finances and share expenses, such as health coverage, their wealth increases by 4%. The same article then suggests that couples whose marriages end in divorce find their wealth three quarters less ten years post-divorce, than couples who remain together. The final point in the article suggested that couples who seek out marriage counseling in an attempt to remain in a healthy marriage, can be viewed as making a wise investment choice with their $100 a week couple’s session.
Premarital Counseling for Lasting Happiness
I always marvel at the couples who come to me for premarital counseling instead of waiting for the problems post marriage to arrive. These couples are making a very wise investment in the beginning of their marriage. In fact, anytime a couple comes to marriage/couple’s counseling I view it as a positive investment in their lives and in their relationships. There is always room for all of us to improve our relationships and marriages. I believe couple’s counseling, although sometimes stigmatized, is always a positive choice towards healthy relationships and a wise investment financially. Investing in couple’s counseling is a positive investment towards satisfaction and happiness.
